EchoStar to pay $190 mln to settle TV Guide suit

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Satellite TV provider EchoStar
Communications Corp. said Tuesday it would pay $190 million to license
on-screen program listing technology from Gemstar-TV Guide
International and to settle all outstanding litigation between the two
companies.
Gemstar-TV Guide has been working to resolve a series of
patent-infringement lawsuits against rival versions of its technology
to try to get the company back on track after a series of
disappointments under its old leadership.
As part of the deal, EchoStar plans to launch and carry the TV
Guide Channel on the most widely distributed programming package,
"America's Top 60," on its DISH network.
The two companies agreed to work together to develop a customized
version of TV Guide On Demand.
Gemstar-TV Guide shares gained 9.1 percent on the news in morning
trading on the Nasdaq, jumping 68 cents to $8.18. EchoStar shares fell
67 cents, or 1.8 percent, to $36.65.

Will this make Dish's EPG obsolete, causing us to download new software?

Cheers!

No. IIRC, all the TV Guide channel provides is a channel with a continuously
scrolling guide with ads and previews to get you to watch the ads. There is no
user control and it is a waste of bandwidth.

It sure is. Many cable systems carry it because they can't offer an EPG. TV
Guide channel scrolls so slow that the program is well underway before you know
it's on. And there's no way to look ahead more than an hour or so. Total waste
of a channel.
